The insurance industry picked me, you might say. I was recruited into the business while I was a student at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire when a friend's father offered me a position at a life insurance company. I started right after graduation, working up to senior positions there before taking a job at Allstate. But I knew that further advancement would require a move outside New England, the region I grew up in and loved.
That’s when serendipity lent a hand. I had a meeting with an Allstate agency owner to help him with his retirement. He told me that, while he had spoken with four potential buyers for his agency, he had a fifth, more qualified buyer in mind. That person? Well, it was me. It was an unexpected opportunity but the absolute right one. So I purchased his Rutland City agency in 2004, and I’ve been doing my best to do right by customers ever since.
I count myself lucky to work in this business, and to do it among the lakes and mountains that have always given me such joy (I boat, fish, water ski and hike). So, I see that I always give back. We’re members of the Rutland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and I volunteer for the United Way of Rutland County. I also support Wounded Warrior Vermont and work with the Rutland City Fire Department to put on fire prevention programs at local schools. To me, that’s part of running a hometown business, where a handshake is a handshake, your word is your word, and customers aren’t just customers, but friends.
