According to the New York Department of Financial Services, you need the following minimum amounts of auto liability coverage to drive in the Empire State:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 in case of death for a person involved in an accident
  • $50,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 in case of death for two or more people in an accident
  • $10,000 property damage liability coverage per incident

The department notes New York drivers are also required to buy the following coverage:

  • Personal injury protection (PIP)

If you’re in a car accident, this coverage may help pay for expenses related to your or your passengers' injuries, including medical bills. This coverage is sometimes called “no-fault,” because it helps pay regardless of whether you were at fault for an accident.

  • Uninsured motorist coverage

If you’re struck by a motorist with no insurance, Allstate may help pay for your medical expenses. Uninsured motorist coverage limits must match your bodily injury liability limits.

Allstate’s policy offerings, in conjunction with New York regulations, may help ensure you’re protected and help give you peace of mind.
